This image was made by the U.S. Department of
Energy Genome Program's Genome Management
Information System. I first saw the image in
C&EN (08/18/08) and thought it did an
excellent job of showing how the sugars used
for bio-ethanol production relate to the
bio-mass they are taken from.
This image is put out by the Lawrence Livermore
National Laboratory. The thing that struck me
about this image is the grey part, lost energy.
The grey zone sort of sums up why high temp
superconductors and better thermoelectric
materials are worth trying to make.
The thermodynamic
pirate flag. I made this graphic a few years
ago when I was in a p chem class, I still like
it a lot. It is a sort of graphical pneumonic
for remembering maxwell's relations. For
example If you want to construct the
differential of the internal energy, dU, for a
reversible closed system with only pressure and
volume work, then go to the two corners
opposite from the U symbol, T and P, and follow
the arrows across paying attention to whether
or not you are going with or against them. Then
the first symbols, T and P get multiplied by
the differential of whatever the arrow takes
you towards, volume and entropy in this
example. With or against the arrow determines
the sign of the TdS or PdV terms, so in this
example we have Tds and -PdV. The two terms
then get added. All in all the differential of
U, internal energy, is then dU = TdS - PdV. The
same could be done for gibbs free energy,
helmholtz free energy, or enthalpy.
These photographs show paper models that represent the crystal structure of TiO2 (top) and the mineral brookite. Seeing these photos reminds me to be grateful for modern crystal structure visualization software. I came across them when looking through an old German journal in the Valley Library at OSU. I was looking for a different paper, but it turned out only the abstract was in English. As I was thumbing through the articles this paper stood out because it was in was one of the few entirely in English. It turns out Linus Pauling is the primary author.
This is a modified image I created so time ago. I added the letters to the structure image, which I found on the web, but I know longer know where it came from and have not been able to find it again since.
